“Architecture is a small piece of this human equation, but for those of us who practice it, we believe in its potential to make a difference, to enlighten and to enrich the human experience, to penetrate the barriers of misunderstanding and provide a beautiful context for this life’s drama”

Frank Gehry

First grade is full of drama.

We started off by looking through our growing postcard and magazine collection of buildings from around the world and documenting in our sketchbooks building shapes and patterns/textures that interest us.

We have been specifically studying the designs of these three architects throughout the project:

What similarities and differences do you notice in their buildings?  As artists and architects, where do you think they draw their inspiration from?

We spent one class outdoors collecting ideas from our surroundings–looking carefully for details around our school and designs in nature that we might incorporate into our buildings.

Back in the classroom, we looked over our sketchbook pages and started working on our drawings.  We considered things like the purpose of the building, materials we might use, what the design of the building would convey about us and its place in the grade 1 city we were creating together.
